Family walking through historic Florence, Italy, on a Florence and Rome vacation

I’ll be honest with you: there is something about Italy that just feels like a celebration of life. Whether you are marking a milestone anniversary or finally taking that family trip you have talked about for years, combining Florence and Rome creates a seamless journey through the heart of Italian culture.

In my experience, these two cities offer the perfect balance of Renaissance beauty and ancient history. I love helping my clients navigate the cobblestone streets and hidden gems of Italy because I know how much it means to have every detail handled before you even leave home.

Is an Italian City Duo Right for Your Celebration?

People often ask me if they should try to see five cities in ten days. My advice is always to slow down. By focusing your time on just Florence and Rome, you actually get to experience the magic of the destination rather than just seeing it through a train window.

Florence is intimate and walkable, which makes it feel like an open-air museum. Rome is big, bold, and buzzing with energy. Together, they offer a complete picture of why Italy is such a beloved destination for memory-making.

A sunset stroll across Ponte Vecchio is one of my favorite ways to experience the beauty of Florence, Italy.

How Do You Get from Florence to Rome?

This is one of the most common questions I get, and I have a very easy answer: the high-speed train. It is comfortable, efficient, and honestly quite fun. I’ll be in your corner to help ensure you have the right tickets and know exactly which station to use.

The journey typically takes about 1.5 hours. You can watch the Tuscan hills roll by while sipping a coffee, and before you know it, you are stepping into the heart of the Eternal City. It is a seamless transition that keeps your vacation feeling effortless.

What Are the Best Things to Do in Florence for a Milestone Trip?

Florence is the birthplace of the Renaissance, so art is everywhere. I always suggest starting with the Accademia Gallery to see Michelangelo’s David. It is one of those moments that truly takes your breath away, no matter how many photos you have seen.

I also love recommending a sunset stroll across the Ponte Vecchio. If you are celebrating something special, we can look into a private food tour through the Oltrarno district. It is the perfect way to enjoy authentic Florentine flavors and local wines away from the main tourist crowds.

Don’t forget to climb the Duomo if you are feeling adventurous. The view from the top gives you a stunning perspective of the red-tiled roofs that define the city skyline.

Outdoor dining on a cobblestone street in Rome, Italy, during a Florence and Rome trip
One of the best ways to end a day in Rome is with dinner in Trastevere, surrounded by warm lights, historic streets, and classic Italian charm.

Why Is Rome the Ultimate Destination for a Family Celebration?

Rome has a way of making everyone feel like a kid again. There is something so powerful about standing inside the Colosseum or tossing a coin into the Trevi Fountain. It is a city built on layers of history, and exploring it feels like a grand adventure.

For families, I often suggest a guided tour of the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica. Having a professional guide makes a huge difference because they bring the stories to life in a way that is engaging for all ages.

In the evenings, I love the Trastevere neighborhood. It is filled with ivy-covered buildings and charming trattorias. Sitting outside with a plate of pasta and a glass of wine is an effortless way to end a day of exploration.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Florence and Rome?

If you want the best weather and slightly smaller crowds, I’ve found that the shoulder seasons are ideal — think April through May or September through October.

Summer can be quite hot and busy, but if that is the only time your schedule allows, don’t worry. I’ve got you covered with smart planning tips to help you beat the heat and the lines. Winter is also a lovely, quieter time for a cozy city break, especially around the holidays.
