A little patience, a few simple ingredients, and a whole lot of goodness. Just like the best travel experiences.
This morning, my kitchen was filled with the tangy-sweet aroma of fresh sourdough blueberry muffins, and it brought a huge smile to my face.
As I mixed the ingredients, folded in the blueberries, and waited for the muffins to bake, I found myself thinking about something I talk about every day—travel.
At first glance, baking muffins and planning vacations don't seem to have much in common. But the more I thought about it, the more similarities I found. In fact, I realized that sourdough blueberry muffins can teach us a lot about great travel planning. Both require patience, thoughtful preparation, and the right ingredients to create something truly memorable.
The Best Things Aren't Rushed
Anyone who has worked with sourdough knows that patience is part of the process. You can't rush the starter. You can't force the fermentation. You have to trust that all the small steps are leading to something wonderful.
Travel is much the same way.
The most memorable vacations don't happen because someone clicked "book now" on the first thing they saw online. They happen when travelers take the time to dream, explore possibilities, and create experiences that truly match their interests.
Whether it's lounging on a Caribbean beach, exploring historic European cities, cruising through Alaska, or discovering hidden gems closer to home, the best journeys begin long before departure day.
What Sourdough Blueberry Muffins Can Teach Us About Great Travel Planning
For my muffins, every ingredient has a purpose. The sourdough adds depth of flavor.
The blueberries bring sweetness. The crumble topping brings that unexpected crunch that complements the soft crumb of the muffin. The recipe brings everything together.
As a travel advisor, I see the same principle at work every day. The most memorable vacations aren't built around a destination alone—they come together through a thoughtful blend of experiences, accommodations, dining, excursions, and personal touches that reflect each traveler's unique style.
When planning travel, every detail matters too. Your destination is important, but so are the experiences you'll have while you're there. The right resort, cruise ship, tour, excursion, dining recommendations, and even the pace of the itinerary can make all the difference.
That's why I enjoy helping clients create vacations that feel uniquely theirs rather than settling for a one-size-fits-all trip.
The Unexpected Moments Are Often the Best
One of my favorite things about blueberry muffins is that no two bites are exactly alike. Sometimes you get a burst of blueberry that makes the whole bite memorable.
Travel works the same way.
Yes, we all look forward to the famous attractions and bucket-list experiences. But often, the moments we remember most are the unexpected ones:
Finding a charming little café tucked away on a side street.
Watching a sunset you didn't plan for.
Meeting locals who share stories and recommendations.
Discovering a place you'd never heard of before arriving.
Those little surprises are often what transform a trip into a treasured memory.
Why I Love Both
Whether I'm baking in my kitchen or helping clients plan their next adventure, I enjoy the process as much as the final result. As a travel advisor, one of the most rewarding parts of my work is transforming a simple travel idea into an experience that's uniquely suited to the person taking it.
There's something rewarding about taking an idea and helping it become a reality.
A few simple ingredients become warm muffins. A travel dream becomes a real itinerary.
And before you know it, you're enjoying something you can't wait to share with others.
A Fun Question for You
As the delicious smell of fresh blueberry muffins began to take over the kitchen, I was inspired to ask you a question: If your next vacation were a muffin flavor, what would it be? 🫐 Blueberry for a charming small-town getaway?
🌴 Pineapple Coconut for a tropical beach escape?
🍎 Apple Cinnamon for a cozy mountain retreat?
🍫 Double Chocolate for an indulgent European adventure?
I'd love to hear your answer.
Just like baking, travel is deeply personal. What feels like the perfect getaway to one person might look completely different to someone else.
